BARNOLDSWICK SLATE RE-ROOF PROJECT
Complete Slate Re-Roof in Barnoldswick
A complete natural slate re-roof on an old terrace just off Gisburn Road in Barnoldswick, replacing a 30-plus-year-old torch-on felt covering with a properly prepared new roof.
The Barnoldswick terrace before work
This older terrace roof, just off Gisburn Road, had been covered with torch-on felt more than 30 years earlier. The covering had reached the end of its serviceable life, with cracking, patching and exposed areas visible across the roof. The brief was to strip away the failed covering and give the house a complete new slate roof rather than continue with short-term repairs.

Stripping back and preparing the roof
Once the old covering was removed, the roof could be assessed properly instead of working over hidden defects. The preparation included clearing the failed felt, checking the roof structure and setting out the new covering so the slate courses would finish cleanly at the eaves, verges and ridge.
New breathable membrane and timber battens
A new breathable roofing membrane and fresh timber battens were installed to create a sound, even base for the slates. This stage is easy to hide once the roof is finished, but it is what gives the new covering its proper support and weathering layout.

Sourcing the right natural slate
We sourced the new slates through Slatescape in Blackburn, selecting a consistent natural slate suitable for the character of the terrace. Using one carefully chosen slate range gives the finished roof a uniform appearance while retaining the traditional look expected on an older Barnoldswick property.
The slates were then set out and fixed course by course, with attention to line, gauge, cuts and the details around the chimney and roof edges. The aim was a durable roof that looks right from the street as well as performing properly in the weather.
New slate installation in Barnoldswick
These project photographs show the new natural slate courses and roofline as the re-roof takes shape after removal of the old torch-on felt. The images follow the work from the original covering through membrane, battens and slate installation.

Roofers Barnoldswick for full re-roofing
This project is typical of the work we carry out for older Barnoldswick terraces and properties across Pendle. If a roof has been patched repeatedly or an old covering has reached the end of its life, a complete re-roof can provide a more reliable long-term solution. We can assess the roof covering, membrane, battens, slate or tile specification and the surrounding roof details before recommending the next step.

Frequently asked questions
Why replace a roof that has old torch-on felt?
After decades of weathering, torch-on felt can crack, blister and fail at joints or edges. If the covering is at the end of its serviceable life, stripping back allows the roof structure and new weathering layers to be prepared properly.
Where were the Barnoldswick slates sourced?
The slates were sourced through Slatescape in Blackburn and selected for a consistent natural-slate finish suited to the terrace.
Can you quote for a Barnoldswick re-roof from photographs?
Photographs of the roof, eaves, ridge and any internal damp can help us give an initial view. We arrange a closer inspection when the roof condition or access cannot be confirmed from images alone.

What homeowners can learn from this project
The photographs show three distinct stages: the old covering, the prepared roof with new membrane and battens, and the new slate installation. When comparing reroofing quotations, ask for that same clarity about the layers and details included beneath the finished surface.
This was a complete replacement project. A roof with a localised defect may need a smaller repair, so the scope should follow an assessment of your own property. Keep a note of where and when any leak appears and share photographs taken from a safe position; these can help explain the problem before a closer inspection.
For an assessment of an existing leak, see our roof repair service. For a replacement quotation, send your postcode and roof photographs through our contact page.
